Conference Workshops

1. Workshop IV: What Every CIEA needs to know about International Enrollment Management
|
Presenter: Stephen Shaw (SOLE PRESENTER), Director of International Admissions, University at Buffalo
Description: With
recent reports showing continued declines of international students in
the U.S., the need for information about the causes and ideas for
solutions is critical. This interactive workshop will focus on three
major topics: (1) international student mobility patterns and market
trends, (2) the basics of how to develop an international enrollment
management plan, and (3) how to make these plans and their
implementation more strategic and proactive. The overarching theme for
the workshop will be that CIEA’s play a key role in their institution’s
success in reaching and maintaining international enrollment targets;
thus, each of the topics will be framed within a discussion of the
roles that CIEA’s play vis-à-vis institutional policymakers and
stakeholders.
Methodologies
and Format: This four-hour workshop will utilize a combination of
“workshopping” techniques: presentation with PowerPoint, round-table
discussions, mini case studies, and brainstorming and feedback.
Expected
Outcomes: Participants will come away with information and statistics
about international student mobility patterns to the U.S. and current
market trends; they will leave with the basic knowledge of how to
develop a strategic international enrollment management plan; and they
will leave with ideas and strategies for shaping and influencing an
institutional discussion about these topics.

|
Presenter: Peggy Pusch, Associate Director of the Intercultural Communication Institute (Portland, OR)
Description: This
workshop is designed to consider three things: (1) How chief
international officers can influence faculty to use methods that draw
in the international student and draw on his or her experience. (2) The
dominant teaching and classroom management styles in the American
classroom and how this prevents international students from being full
participants and also from making contributions to the learning

the experience of diverse students. Video, discussion, and brief
