Who’s Who at the AIEA Secretariat:

Dr. Darla K. Deardorff, Executive Director

Darla K. Deardorff is Executive Director of the Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA), based at Duke University. In addition, she is a research scholar in the Program in Education at Duke University and has held national leadership positions with NAFSA and Forum on Education Abroad. Editor of the recently published The Sage Handbook of Intercultural Competence (Sage, 2009), she has published widely on international education and cross-cultural issues. With nearly 20 years of experience in the field of intercultural education, she teaches courses in international education and intercultural communication and is on faculty of The Summer Institute of Intercultural Communication in Portland, OR. She has given invited talks, trainings and workshops around the world on intercultural competence and assessment and serves as a consultant and trainer on these topics. The intercultural competence models developed from her research are being used in numerous countries and she is recipient of several awards related to her work. Her areas of specialty include cross-cultural training, assessment and evaluation, teacher/faculty preparation/development, curriculum internationalization, global leadership, and  intercultural coaching. She received her master’s and doctorate degrees from North Carolina State University.

Ms. Elizabeth Gorsuch, Associate Director

Elizabeth has over twelve years of administrative experience in higher education, most recently as Executive Director of the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2003-08). Elizabeth has served in a variety of roles related to international education and is a former executive board member for the Society of International Development - Triangle Chapter and general member of the United Nations Association and NAFSA. Additionally, she has received grants to internationalize curricula in undergraduate honors courses and develop outreach programs and internships with major institutions in North Carolina and throughout the U.S.  She holds a master's degree in liberal studies from Duke University and an undergraduate degree from UNC. Her work interests include global leadership development, intercultural communications and program monitoring and evaluation. Her former positions have provided her extensive contact with government officials, healthcare professionals and business leaders worldwide.

Rosemary Holland, Program Associate

A German-born, British-educated Australian with a multi-lingual background in ten countries and travels to some twenty more, Rosemary Holland has served multi-national corporations including Sony Music’s classical record label in New York, where she served as director of artist and repertoire development, and the non-profit and academic sectors including The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she served as director of artistic affairs for Carolina Performing Arts.
